Islam Makhachev defeats Ian Machado Garry by unanimous decision
UFC 330: Makhachev vs. Machado Garry
Round 5 · 5:00
Makhachev vs Machado Garry — Welterweight Title · UFC 330
What happened
The result, the defining moments, and what the verdict means.
Islam Makhachev opened the UFC 330 main event by taking control with his grappling, then dropped Ian Machado Garry in the second round with a right hand and a left high kick after a clinch break. It gave the champion the clearest moment of the fight and forced Garry to recover under sustained pressure.
Garry worked his way back into the contest in the third, out-landing Makhachev as the champion began to tire. The challenger had found a route into the fight, but Makhachev returned to his wrestling in the fourth and repeatedly put Garry back on the mat.
Makhachev closed the fight by taking Garry’s back after another fifth-round takedown. That late control settled the pace of the final round and secured a unanimous decision, keeping the welterweight title with the champion.

Career stats per UFC.com; recent form is each fighter's last five bouts. Numbers reflect records coming into fight night. Bars compare each stat on a fixed scale; the “Edge” marker flags the leading corner where the gap is meaningful. The snapshot plots five career rates — output, striking defense, durability (strikes absorbed, inverted), takedown defense and finish rate — each normalised on its own scale.
Pre-fight analysis — how we saw it going in
Case for Makhachev
Makhachev's clearest route is to turn a striking exchange into a takedown, then make Garry solve the next position before he can rebuild distance.
Case for Machado Garry
Garry needs to keep the fight long, make Makhachev reset after every exchange and force the champion to cross open space before the clinch arrives.
What We Were Watching For
- Garry's first response when Makhachev closes distance behind his striking.
- Whether Makhachev can hold position after Garry's initial takedown defense.
- The champion's pace against a challenger whose best work comes with room to see attacks develop.
- How quickly each fighter can turn a defended attack into the next phase.
