What happened
The result, the defining moments, and what the verdict means.
Ribovics turned the lightweight bout into exactly the fight Barboza did not want. Cageside Press reports both men swinging heavily early, with Ribovics landing repeatedly, opening a cut and pressing forward in close quarters where Barboza could not deploy the kicks that built his reputation. Ribovics worked knees up the middle and looping hooks; Barboza answered with body kicks and a spinning back kick, but was rocked by the end of the round and had to hold on to stay upright.
Barboza went back to his corner with a split shin that bled heavily and damage around the eye, and chose to continue. In the second he was hemmed against the fence and retreated under body shots, elbows and punches until referee Herb Dean stepped in at 1:32.
Barboza laid down his gloves in the cage afterwards, signalling his retirement, and told Joe Rogan: “Every single fight I promise, I did my best. Thank you, thank you so much.”
