Gaethje had his best stretch in the first round, chopping at Khabib's lead leg and forcing the champion to reset before entries. Khabib still kept walking him down, and late in the round he finally timed the takedown, finishing on top and reminding Gaethje that every open-space exchange carried a grappling tax.
