The Read

Zahabi is a measured, jab-led counter-striker whose game has been built on volume from range, a stiff lead hand, and elite takedown defense (84% per UFC.com) that lets him keep fights standing where he wants them. Younger brother of Tristar head coach Firas Zahabi, he is a long-time technician who started 1-2 in the UFC but has since reinvented himself into a poised, ring-IQ-heavy operator. He carries a current seven-fight win streak — his last loss came to Vince Morales in May 2019 — and at #6 in the bantamweight rankings he is, at 38, in the best form of his career.

The case against him is power and pace: he averages only 4.54 significant strikes landed per minute and absorbs 4.08, so several of his recent wins (Munhoz, Basharat, Aldo, Vera) were close, sometimes contested decisions rather than dominant performances — the Aldo and Vera nods both drew 'robbery' complaints from the losing camp. He has just six KO/TKOs and two submissions in 14 wins, and he has effectively shelved his wrestling to box, which against a rangy, faster volume striker like Sean O'Malley is a real gamble. The questions going into Freedom 250: can his jab and chin hold up against O'Malley's length and output over potentially five rounds, and is his late-fight conditioning enough to bank rounds rather than survive them?
